Oral hygiene is necessary to maintain a healthy smile. A clean, healthy mouth also contributes to better overall health. At PGA Smiles, Dr. Benson recommends patients have routine dental checkups and cleanings. Most dental insurance plans will cover these routine visits. If not, we offer a variety of payment options including special 0% financing for patients needing financial assistance.
Here is what you can expect at your visit with us:
Prophy (dental cleaning)
Plaque buildup, known as tartar, is removed from your teeth. Plaque is caused by bad bacteria that build up in the mouth. If not removed, this plaque will harden and turn into tartar, which can lead to gingivitis or even periodontal (gum) disease. Even with your best efforts, regular brushing and flossing are just not enough to prevent and remove tartar buildup. Tartar can only be removed by a professional dental cleaning.
Some patients may require additional treatments during their cleaning. Fluoride treatments help prevent cavities and protect tooth enamel from deteriorating. Although fluoride is in some kinds of toothpaste and tap water, it sometimes just isn’t enough for patients. This is why our fluoride treatments may help provide extra protection to your teeth.
Fluoride treatments are most effective for children ages 6 to 16 when their permanent teeth are beginning to erupt and before their teeth have had the chance to develop cavities. However, fluoride treatments are also effective in adults. Dr. Benson and your dental hygienist will determine if you are a candidate for fluoride treatments.
During your visit, we also check for any issues in your mouth such as decay or damaged teeth. Our cutting-edge X-ray technology allows us to detect issues during the early stages. If any problems are found, we can work with you to repair your smile.
Our hygienist will also evaluate your oral health to check for signs of gingivitis or periodontal disease. If you experience swollen, bleeding gums, you could have gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis can develop into periodontal disease, which is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Your at-home oral hygiene habits, as well as regular checkups and cleanings, can help reduce your risk of developing gum disease.
Oral cancer screening
An oral cancer screening is another important aspect of your visit. Oral cancer can be treatable and have a high survival rate if caught in the early stages. This is why we screen patients for oral cancer by evaluating their soft tissue. Oral cancer screenings are not only quick and simple but painless as well. Plus, this simple screening could save your life.
Evaluation of your bite
We evaluate your bite to determine if you have any temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD). An uneven bite can lead to a host of other issues including pain when chewing, popping or clicking sounds in the jaw, headaches, and even neck or back pain. If you suffer from TMD, we have treatments that can relieve you of your pain and correct the problem.
Dental appliances are cleaned and evaluated
If you are a patient with dentures, partials, or a mouth guard, we will professionally clean those as well. Dr. Benson will assess the condition of your oral appliance to ensure their effectiveness.
Questions and concerns are addressed
We also ensure any questions or concerns you may have are addressed during your visit. Our goal is to make sure patients understand everything regarding their oral health. At PGA Smiles, it is important to us that we develop a relationship with our patients to help make you feel comfortable during your visit.
